 Gary "Pete" Penland             (1946 - 2019)
Asheville....Gary "Pete" Penland, age 73, of Asheville, NC, passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at the VA Medical Center Valor Hospice Unit.  He was born on May 17, 1946 in Buncombe County, NC to the late Ralph Dupree and Gussie Payne Penland.  Gary was a United States Navy & Vietnam War Veteran who served from 1963 to 1967.  He also worked as a railroad conductor and brakeman for the Southern Railway for 24 years.  He was a member of Sunnyview  Baptist Church in Asheville, NC.  Along with his parents, Gary was also preceded in death by his seven brothers, three sisters and a grandson, Tyler Foster who passed away in 2017.  Gary is survived by his loving wife, Doris "Dotsy" Lanning Penland, his son, Kevin  Penland (Sandi) of Florence, SC; his daughters, Krista Glenn (David) of Black Mountain, NC and Karen Griffin of Candler, NC;  his grandson, Connor Penland;  his step-grandchildren, Brady and Anna Moore, and Randa Glenn;  his two great grandchildren, Hunter Rathbone and Skyler Wright;  his brother-in-law, Bill Reynolds of Black Mountain, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Alice Fay Penland                 (1954 - 2019)   
Marion, NC..... In the early hours of Wednesday, October 2, 2019, while surrounded by her loved ones, Alice Penland, age 65, passed away at her daughter's home in Nebo.  The daughter of the late Arville and Carmen Sherlin  Honeycutt.  She was born in McDowell County, North Carolina on March 18, 1954.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Buddy and Tommy Honeycutt;  sisters, Barbara Davis, Kay Buchanan and Libby Wilson;  one son, Shane Penland.  A loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, Alice was a member of Dysartsville Church of Christ.  She loved her family and enjoyed making memories and spending time with her family.  Alice is survived by her husband of 50 years, Glenn Penland;  one son, Kevin Penland (Dottie);  one daughter, Missie Stevens (Bill);  granddaughters, Megan Stevens and Majorie Jones (James, III);  sister, Mary Hudgins (Carrol).

Carl Eugene Penland            (1932 - 2019)
Carl Eugene Penland, age 87, passed away December 19, 2019 at Diversicare of Oak Ridge.  He was born October 24, 1932 in Macon County, North Carolina to Henry and Effie Patterson Penland. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Connie J. Penland; his siblings, Edwin H. Penland and Bessie P. Hudson; his nieces, Donna Richardson and Shelia Hudson.  He is survived by his sisters:  Kate Amos, Elaine Griffies and Mabel Penland, nieces and nephews, Anne Bissett, Sharon and Tim Rose, Michael and Wilma Penland.

Kenneth Ray Penland           (1953 - 2019)
Anniston, Alabama......Kenneth Ray Penland passed away Sunday, December 22, 2019.  He is survived by a son, Jeremy Arnold;  three grandchildren - Xavier Arnold, Marilyn Arnold and Lily Arnold, all of Oxford, two sisters - Inez Petty and Glenda Patterson, both from Anniston, along with 14 nieces and nephews.  Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents Willis and Mary Penland of Anniston, brother, Johnny Penland and a sister, Janet Smart all from Anniston. Mr. Penland was a lifelong resident of Calhoun County and a graduate of Saks High School.  He was an Artist and a State Basketball Champion.  He retired from the Steel Industry, and was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.

Talmage Newton Penland    (1930 - 2019)
Talmage Newton Penland, Asheville attorney and community leader, passed away on Saturday, November 9, 2019, at the WNC Baptist Home. Talmage was born January 23, 1930, in Hayesville, NC, to James and Iola Penland.  He was the youngest of seven children.  His family moved to Asheville when Talmage was eight years old where his father became a rehabilitation counselor for the state - the first blind person to hold that position.  Talmage was a 1949 graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School.  While in junior high, he met the love of his life, Helen Elizabeth Turner.  Both attended Mars Hill College and during that time were married March 18, 1951, at West Asheville Baptist Church.  He attended Appalachian State University and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish.  He taught in the Buncombe County school system and worked as an insurance adjuster for 13 years.  He and Helen's daughter Rebecca "Becky" was born in 1954 and two years later their daughter Cynthia "Cricket' was born.  Later, he received his law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and practiced law for 46 years.  Their son Danny and another daughter, Diana  were born during that time.  Talmage retired in 2017.  He was a dedicated and energetic community leader.  He served for 30 years on the Board of Trustees of Asheville Buncombe Community College and was Chairman of the Board for two terms.  He served in various community leadership positions for many years, and in 1998 he was awarded the NC Association of Community College Trustee's highest honor, the I. E. Ready Award, for "his outstanding leadership in developing support for the North Carolina community college system."  Talmage served as music minister at Baptist churches in Asheville and Durham, and served as a Deacon at West Asheville Baptist Church and, more recently, First Baptist Church of Asheville.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Helen Elizabeth (Turner); his daughter, Cynthia "Cricket" (Penland) Trisdale, his brothers, Eugene, Cecil and Buford Penland, and his sister, Elvita Setzer.  He is survived by his brother, Phillip Penland, of Asheville; sister, Alice Robin Fraley, of Leicester; daughter, Rebecca Penland McCurry (Elvis), of Black Mountain;  son, Daniel James Penland (Dottie), of Asheville;  Diana Penland Allison (Dennis), of Gaffney, SC;  granddaughter, Allison Carolina Fulkerson (Ben), and great grandchildren, Gavin Penland, Kiernan Penland, Solara Penland, Christian Allison, Cody Allison, Ricky Allison, Kelly Allison, Haley Allison, Kira Noble, Kolby Noble, Rose Fulkerson and Rhett Fulkerson.  
    NOTE:  Talmage Penland was instrumental in creating the "Penland Historical Society, Inc."  Through the years, he served as the legal adviser for it.

 Brad Penland                          (1990 - 2019)
 New Richmond, Ohio,,,,,,, Brad Penland, age 28, of New Richmond, Ohio passed away on October 23, 2019.  He was predeceased by his father Kevin Penland, and his grandparents, Delza and Carolyn Ison.  He is survived by his son Aaron Roy Murica Penland; his brother Travis (Taylor);  his mother, Diane Purdy of New Richmond, Ohio;  his aunts and uncles, Ron Walters (Dawnya) of Arkansas, Don Purdy (Tina) of Bethel, Ohio, Keith Ison of Florida, Jim Shepherd (Lisa) of              Batavia, Ohio and Debbie (Larry) and his grandparents, Ron and Mary Walters of New Richmond, Ohio.  He is also survive by 11 cousins and 10 great cousins.

Maxine  Lewis Penland               (1940 - 2019)          
Maxine Lewis Penland, 79, of Morganton, NC passed away, Saturday, December 28, 2019.  Born on July 21, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Arvil and Eleathia Lewis.  Maxine was a loving mother, and a grandmother to many.  She was a woman of faith and loved the Lord.  Maxine is survived by her husband, Clifton Roy Penland;  children, Angela Clay (Dennis), Kim Williams (Todd), Brian Penland (Jennifer), Denise Anderson (Chuck);  grandchildren,  Ashley Barrier (Mark), Noah Williams (Kristen), Lauren Davis (Tyler), Macon Penland, Sophie Penland, Carson Anderson, Jordan Clay Latner, Bryant Clay;  great grandchildren, Emma Davis, Jameson Davis, Jacey Patton, Marlie Mauney;  sisters, Nadine Hopson, Kathleen Rhymer, Evelyn Pritchard, Shelia Taylor, Barbara June Trotter;  brother, Junior Lewis.  In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her brother, Bob Lewis.

Roger Franklin Penland             (1954 - 2019)
Grafton, WV........Roger Franklin Penland, 65, of Grafton, formally of Katy, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2019 at United Hospital Center.  He was born on August 30, 1954 in Newport News, Virginia, a son of the late Marion Ward Penland and Lelia (Summers) Penland.  Roger was a U.S. Navy Veteran and proudly served from 1972 - 1974 during the Vietnam era.  He was a disabled veteran who stayed at home to take care of his four sons.  He is survived by his four sons, Jonathan. Penland and wife, Amber of Grafton, Andrew T. Penland, Columbus, Ohio, Roger F. Penland, Jr. of Fairmont and Mark J. Penland of Fairmont;  five grandchildren, Ethan M. Penland, Nathan L. Penland, Holden C. Penland, Liam Penland, and Willow Penland;  brother, Robert H. Watkins and wife, Barbara of Youngstown, Ohio.  In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Judy Kay (Harris) Penland and his daughter Jennifer Ann Penland.
