Congratulations Recent College Grads - we are proud of you!  
           *   Lauren Victoria Whitney graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in
               Biomedical Engineering, cum laude from Texas A & M University on the 12th of
               May.   Lauren will be attending the Texas A & M University Graduate program in
               Biomedical Engineering this fall.   Lauren is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs Cole
               Whitney of Murphy, Texas, the sister of  Sean Whitney who graduated  from 
               A & M last year, and the granddaughter of Vernon & Connie Penland, of Wonder
               Lake, Illinois. 

         *   Blake Colton Steczkowski graduated with a Masters Degree in Orthotics &
               Prosthetics from Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama on 12    
               May.   Blake is the son of John & Rhonda (Penland) Steczkowski of Cedar Park,
               Texas, the grandson of Charles & Phyllis Penland of Selma, Texas and Arthur &
               Martha Steczkowski of San Antonio, Texas.   Blake will be working on a
               'residency' for the next year with the Fourroux Prosthetics organization in
               Alabama.   Blake is also a graduate of Texas A & M from two years ago!  

​          NOTE; Interestingly, Lauren's grandfather & Blake's great grandfather were first
                      cousins.

                   Brittany (Penland) Lasseigne, PhD 
                receives competitive  NIH training grant
  Huntsville, Alabama..... Brittany Lasseigne, PhD, a senior scientist at HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, has been selected by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to receive a Pathway to Independence (K99) training grant.   The NIH established the Pathway to Independence award to increase and maintain a strong cohort of new independent investigators.   Over the next year, Lasseigne will continue and expand her research into developing novel strategies to use computational genomics to study complex human diseases.   Lasseigne, who already is an accomplished and published investigator, will undergo a formal mentoring and training program in genomics, computer science, statistics and career development under the leadership of Rick Myers, PhD, President and Science Director of HudsonAlpha.   She also will work with Greg Cooper, PhD, faculty investigator at HudsonAlpha.   "By using  machine learning and novel data integration approaches, I will leverage the unique information captured by different genomic sequencing technologies to help improve big data integration and also to generate genomic signatures for cancers and psychiatric diseases,"  Lasseigne explained.   "My goal is  to better understand the relationships between the different types of genomic data , which will lead to better tools for future genomic research, improve understanding of the basic mechanisms of molecular processes, and establish clinical utilitry of molecular changes, and establish clinical utility of molecular changes associated with disease".

 Frank Douglas (Doug) Penland      1947 - 2018
 Frank 'Doug' Penland, 70 of Cedargrove, NC, passed away on 5 March, 2018.   He was       born July 28, 1947, the son of the late Grover and Hazel (Cooper) Penland of Hurdle Mills,   NC.   He proudly served his country in Vietnam in field artillery and received a Purple   Heart for the sacrifices he gave to his country.   He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra   Sumner Penland of the home;  his son Tony Penland and wife Traci, of Roan Mountain,   TN;  daughters, Holli Klooz and husband Michael, of the home, and Stacey Glenn and   husband Scott, of Hurdle Mills, NC.   In addition to his wife and children, Doug proudly   answered to the title of 'Pa' to his four grandchildren;  Haley and Kara Penland and   Austin and Cailin Glenn.   He is also survived by his brothers, Glenn Penland of   Hillsborough, NC, Wayne Penland and Bobby Penland, both of Graham, NC;  Billy   Penland of Hillsborough, NC;  and a sister, Pam Reyes of Graham, NC.   In addition to his   parents, Doug was preceded in death by his brothers, Carl Cooper and Donald Penland,   both of Roxboro, NC, and Danny Penland of Hillsborough, NC;  and two sisters, Patricia   Penland of Hurdle Mills, NC, and Helen Penland of Hillsborough, NC.

 Earl Christopher Penland            1957 - 2018
Earl Christopher Penland, 60, of Black Mountain, passed away peacefully into the presence of His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, June 11, 2018 at Asheville Care Center after a long and courageous battle with painful chronic health issues.    He was born on August 10, 1957 in Buncombe County to the late Walter Calvin Penland who passed away on June 26, 2012 and Kathryn Crabtree Penland who passed away on October 9, 2002.   Earl married Linda Strickland on May 15, 1986 who was his loving, faithful wife and soul mate for more than 33 years.   He was a life-long resident of Buncombe County.   He graduated from Enka High School in 1975 and worked as a landscaper.   He also worked for several years at Sayles Bleachery before his health issues forced him to retire early.   In his youth, Earl was an active member of the Mt. Moriah Wesleyan Church in Candler, NC.   He loved singing and music and often played hymns on his song flute.   Earl also loved fishing and being outdoors.   His CB 'handle' was "The Big Fish."   Earl completed and gave away many pieces of needlework including hundreds of crosses.   He enjoyed reading the Bible, and especially enjoyed discussing the stories recorded in nthe Gospels.   Although he was physically unable to attend church in the past 15 years, he was a definite witness to those who came to visit him through his kind and generous heart and his clear testimony that he was a follower of Jesus Christ.   He is survived by his wife, Linda Strickland Penland;  his brother, Terry Wayne Penland (Amy) of Canton, NC; and his sister, Kathey Y. Penland of Brighton, CO.

Polly Ruth Penland                   1952 - 2018      
Henderson, NC............. Polly Ruth Penland, 65, of Henderson, NC, died Sunday, June 24, 2018, of complications of ALS.   She was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of the late Thomas E. Penland, Jr. and the late Katherine Arnold Penland.   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Howard Penland.   She was graduated in 1974 from Furman University with a bachelor's degree in history.   She earned a master's degree in social work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1979.   Polly had resided in Henderson County since 1985.   She was a gifted, compassonate psychotherapist and clinical supervisor in the public and private sectors. She helped generations of families and children heal, and launched many new therapists to serve the community.   She worked for Blue Ridge Community Mental Health Center and TREND Community Mental Health Services.   She was a founding member of Mountain Counseling Associates, where she provided counseling services until just before her death.   She is survived by her husband James T. Anderson;  her daughter, Kelsey Penland Anderson and her son-in-law, Graham M. Whitley, both of San Antonio, Texas, her brother-in-law Roy Anderson and Roy's son, Eric Anderson; her brothers, James W. Penland and his wife Ruth Primm of Atlanta, Georgia and their children, Michael, Michelle, Thomas and Katherine;  and Lee Thomas Penland and his wife Katie D. Kelly of Tiger, Georgia;  and Lee;s children, Leah and Lauren and Lauren's husband Chandler Van de Water and their children, Everly amd Finn.

Georgiana Penland Beach              1942 - 2018
Georgiana Penland Beach, 76, of Franklin, NC passed away Saturday, June 23, 2018.  Born in Macon, Georgia, she was preceded in death by her parents, George Penland and Anita "Pat" Holland Penland, and her husband, Leroy Beach.   She was also preceded in death by Tammy Swafford, who she loved  and treated as her own.   Georgiana was a member of Franklin Church of Christ.   She enjoyed music, gardening, playing cards and taking care of children.   She is survived by her daughter, Anita Cook and husband Chris of Franklin;  brothers, Radford "Butch" Penland, Lonnie Penland and Terry Penland all of Franklin;  sister, Glenda Penland of Franklin;  two grandchildren, Amber Cook and Cole Cook and numerous nieces and nephews.  Other survivors include Brooke Swafford and Isaiah.
