            Penland Family Losses in 2015
  We are experiencing a large number of family members passing away, so far, this year.  Below are the ones we know about!   Our deepest sympathies and best wishes are extended to the families, who have lost loved ones!   We pray God's richest blessings of comfort for each of you!

  Phoebe Lucille Fulbright Penland  (1916 -2015)
ICARD, NC.....Mrs Phoebe Lucille Fulbright Penland, 98, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at College Pines Nursing Center, following a period of declining health. She was born September 9, 1916 in Catawba County to the late Charlie Franklin and Lemmie Caroline Abernathy Fulbright and was the beloved wife of the late William T. "Bill" Penland.  She graduated from Hickory High School in 1935.  After marrying Bill, they moved to Icard where they together owned and operated the Icard Dairy Farm.   She is survived by two daughters, Neta Currie and husband Tom of Weaverville, and Barbara Jean "Bobbie" Wilson and husband Edward of Clarksville, Tennessee.   She is also survived by seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Marilyn Moletta (Penland) Hensley   (1942 - 2015)
Marilyn Moletta (Penland) Hensley of Marion, passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.   She was born April 5, 1942 in Yancey County to the late Arnold Macon Penland and Vergie Matilda Penland.  She was married to Dean Hensley who preceded her in death in 1999.   Mrs Hensley was a member of Catawba Heights Baptist Church,   She was a Christian lady who loved people.   She was known for her selfless service and was a very giving person.   She loved the Lord and her family.  She and her family owned  and operated Little Buck's Grill for over 30 years in Marion.   Marilyn is survived by a son, Jimmy Hensley and three brothers & one sister, Calvin Penland & Roscoe Penland, both of Marion, Jerry penland of Marshall and Kathy Penland of Burnsville.

Judy Penland Pritchard       (1946 - 2015)
Judy Penland Pritchard, age 68, of Marion, went home to be with the Lord following several years of MS, on Sunday, June 7, 2015.   Judy was born in Burke County on June 25, 1946 and was a loving daughter of the late Bill & Bessie Jones Penland.   She was a member of Rocky Pass FWB Church where she served as a choir member, soloist and Sunday School Teacher.   She will be remembered by her family as a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother.   She always had a wonderful smile and a great attitude in spite of her sickness.   Preceding Judy in death was a daughter, Gina Pritchard whom she is now with.   Left to chertish her memory is her husband of 49 years, Jerry B. Pritchard, of the home;  a daughter, Melody Pritchard Burnette and husband Henry Burnette, Jr. of Marion;  a brother, Steven Penland of Morganton and a grandchild, Aurora Burnette.   Interment was in Rocky Pass Free Will Baptist Church cemetery.

Sara Helen Penland     (1927 - 2015)
Sara Helen Penland passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 22, 2015.  She was born in Opelika, Alabama, on September 15, 1927, to Peyton P. and Katie Belle (Hardy) May.   She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Reverend Julian P. May.   Sara Helen graduated from Clift High School in Opelika at age 17.   After high school she worked as a secretary with WJHO radio, where she met her husband, Staff Sergeant Raymond D. Penland, the local Army Recruiter who died in North Korea in 1950.   She lived and worked for eight years in Albany , Georgia.   Upon her return to Opelika, she worked for West Point Pepperell Cost Accounting Department until retirement.   Sara was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Opelika.   She is survived by two sons;  Lieutenant Raymond C. Penland, USN (Ret.), and his wife Candace S. Penland, Chief Yeoman, USN (Ret.) of Virginia Beach;  Stephen P. Penland of Opelika;   her grandchildren, Raymond D. Penland, II of Virginia Beach;  Peyton J. Penland of Mason, Ohio, Adrian Graviet (Jason) of Toney, Alabama;  and Great Grandchildren, Clay and Sidney Graviet of Toney, Alabama.
   *       *       *       *       *         Nancy Louise Penland Swaggerty    (1926 - 2015)
Knoxville, TN ....... Nancy Louise Penland Swaggerty woke up in the arms of Jesus on Saturday, July 18, 2015.   Louise was born in Hayesville, NC on September 20, 1926, to Allie and Silvey Penland.   After graduating frm Ft. Sanders School of Nursing in Knoxville, she worked as a registered nurse for Dr's Bankston, Davis, Gibbs and Howe for twenty years.   Louise was a faithful member of Norwood Baptist Church.   She was preceded in death by her parents;  husband, Staff Sergeant Carl S. Swaggerty;  son, Douglas Swaggerty;  brothers, Aud, Keith and Hoyt Penland.   She is survived by brother Thomas (Janie) Penland;  daughters, Linda (Garry) Long and Susan (John) Emert;  grandchildren, Donald (Regina) Long,  Beth (Tim) Kirby, John (Amy) Emert, Jr. and Ryan Swaggerty;  sixteen great-grandchildren;  three great-great-grandchildren;  and a host of nieces and nephews.   Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Richard "Dick" D. Penland        (1936 - 2015)
Richard "Dick" Penland, died peacefully at home on June 16, 2015 in Bonita Springs, Florida.    Richard was the son of the late Richard and Ruth Penland.   Beloved husband of Janice for 54 years, loving father of Lisha (husband, Ronald) Pauli, Laura (husband, Joseph) O'Connor and Lynne Kolbet, cherished grandfather of Shannon, Erin, Katie, Gwen, Joseph, Samantha and Kellie, dear brother of the late Dennis Penland.   Richard was born on 22 September, 1936 in Akron, Ohio.   He graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School in 1954.   He then served in the
U. S. Navy, and later attended Akron University and graduated with a degree in History in 1962.  He married Janice Corl in 1961.  They lived in the Akron area until 1976 when they moved to Naperville.   Richard retired as Vice President of the 'International Games Company' in 1993 and he and Janice moved to southwest Florida in 2000.

Mary Dell Penland            (1951 - 2015)
Mary Dell Penland, 64, went home to be with The Lord, Monday, March 23, 2015 at her home.  A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Bill and Mary Tilson Ball.   Mary Dell was a member of Landmark Baptist Church and was a faithful volunteer at Yancey County Christian School.   Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Edward Penland;  children:  Mary Ann Fowler and husband, Bobby, of Burnsville, Stacy Penland and wife Tonya, of Toccoa, Georgia, and Teresa Fox and husband, Greg, of Burnsville;  grandchildren;   Clarissa Thomas and husband, Ray, Jeremy Wheeler, Kalie Penland, Titus Penland, Sarah and Nicholas Fox;   great-granddaughter, Maddalyn Thomas;   sisters:  Barbara Buckner and husband, Jack, of Burnsville, Wanda Stiles of Charlotte, Nancy Gortney and husband, Glenn, of Burnsville, and Betty Jane Deyton of Green Mountain;  brothers:   Robert Ball and wife, Martha, of Tennessee Ridge, Tennessee and Sammy Ball and wife, Kay, of Burnsville.   Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Tanya "Ruth" Penland         (1937 - 2015)
Tanya "Ruth" Penland, 77, passed away Saturday, January 10, 2015 at John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center.   Mrs Penland was born in Buncombe County to the late Ralph and Gladys Lee Edwards Hall.   She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Billy Ray Edwards.   Ruth was a member of Calvary Free- Will Baptist Church in Swannanoa and was a dear mom to her four sons.   She is survived by her four sons, Dean Penland and his wife, Melissa, David Penland and his wife, Darlene, Aaron Penland and his wife, Teresa and Erik Penland and his wife, Tracie along with six grandchildren:  Faith Nolan, Caleb Ross Penland, Mason Penland, Caleb Sutton Penland, Ryan Landon and Ayden Penland.

Patricia Ann  Penland               (1943 - 2015)
Candler, NC.....Patricia Ann Penland, age 72, passed away Wednesday, August 5, 2015.   A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, Patricia was the daughter of the late William McKinley Joseph Henry Penland, Sr. and the late Opal Jeanette Hagan Penland.   She loved going to the Outer Banks and Ocracoke Island and enjoyed camping at Carolina Hemlocks Campground in Burnsville.   Preceding her in death in addition to her parents were brothers:  Robert & Arthur Penland and a sister, Beverly Smith.   Surviving are her son, William Grant Penland;  a brother, William Penland, Jr.;  a sister, Vonda Surrett and a niece, Michelle Shook (who was like a daughter to Patricia) and many nieces and nephews.   Also surviving is her 16 year old dog, Samantha.

Norris D. Penland                     (1929 - 2015)
Norris D. Penland was born on May 3, 1929 in Weaverville, North Carolina and passed away on July 31, 2015.   Beloved husband to Ethel.  Father to Cecile (Alejandro Garcia) and Helen Penland.  Brother to Carl Penland from Maryland, AnaBelle Martin, and Carolyn Rice from Vero Beach.   Norris moved to South Florida in 1971 from Raleigh, North Carolina.  He specialized in fraud investigations.

Frances Potts Penland              (1928 - 2015)
Frances Potts Penland, age 87, of Sylva, North Carolina passed away Monday July 27, 2015.   She is the daughter of the late Hubert and Minnie Potts.   She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Penland who passed away in 2003.   She was an active member of the Woman's Missionary Society.  She enjoyed spending time with her family and her dog Babe.  She is survived by one daughter, Sarah Grant and husband Jim;  one grandchild, Jamey Grant and wife Stephanie;  Two great-grandchildren, Clayton and Mason Grant.   She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Emerson "Red" Penland               ( 1943 - 2015)
Winder, Georgia...Emerson "Red" Penland, of Winder passed away Thursday July 23, 2015.   Mr. Penland retired from DeKalb Steel.   He is survived by his wife of 40 years Patricia Sailors Penland, sons Jonathon W. Penland and wife Stephanie, Anthony Blaine Penland and Krista Waite;  daughters, Melinda Coffey and husband Phillip, and Meloney Siriani;  brothers, Tex Penland and wife Judy, and Horace Penland;  sisters, Joan Bennett, Wanda Williamson, Martha Fowler, Judy Tidwell and husband Clinton, and Mae Fielden;  8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.   He is preceded in death by his parents, Loyd and Ellen Penland, daughter Denise Sheppard and sister Jeanette Myers.

Wayne B. Penland                    ( 1929 - 2015)
Horton Creek, North Carolina .... Wayne B. Penland, age 86, of the Horton Creek Community, went home to be with The Lord on Tuesday August 4, 2015 at the Brookside Rehabilitation Care Center.  A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Hubert and Daisy Penland.   Wayne enjoyed sports, reading and spending time with his family, especially his daughter, Angie.   Surviving is his loving wife of 55 years, Pearl Wilcox Penland;  a daughter, Angie Benfield and husband James of Horton Creek;  grandson, James Benfield, II of Raleigh;  sister, Peggy Buchanan and husband Tommy;  nephew Timmy Buchanan and wife, Allie and great-nephew, Jackson Buchanan all of Jacks Creek.   Several cousins also survive.

Sarah Jane Penland                ( 1936 - 2015)
Sarah Jane Penland, age 79, of the Possum Trot Community, passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2015 at Brookside Rehabilitation and Care Center.   A native of Yancey County, she was the daughter of the late Curt and Gertrude Edwards Honeycutt and the wife of the late Kelly Lee Penland who passed away in 2008.   She was also preceded in death by a son, Herman Penland.   Sarah loved to crochet and play bingo.   Surviving is her daughter, Susie Whitson:  granddaughter, Jessica Whitson and husband Daniel, all of Burnsville;  Great-grandchildren:  Bradley and Connor Bryant;  sisters, Doris Ann  Silvers of Burnsville and Maggie Fender of Spruce Pine and a brother, Rufus Honeycutt and wife Myrtle, also of Burnsville.   Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Harvey A. Penland               (1937 - 2015)
Auburn, IN........... Harvey A. Penland, 78, passed away on 25 June 2015 at his home at Smith Farms Manor in Auburn, Indiana.

Colleen Mona Penland           (1932 - 2015)
Elkhart, IN......Colleen Mona Penland, 82, of Elkhart, IN died February 10, 2015 at the same place.   She was born October 3, 1932 at Pleasant Lake, IN to Carroll and Jeanett Penland.   On November 8, 1953 she was married to Carl Lechlitner, who died November 2, 2005.   Surviving are children, Michael (and Kathy) Lechlitner, Douglas (and Leigh) Lechlitner, and Debra (Evan) Martin;  ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and one brother, Delos Penland.   Her brothers, Bazil and Calvin Penland preceded her in death.   Memorial services were held February 14, 2015 at the Olive Mennonite Church, Elkhart, Indiana with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

James "Jim" Penland              (1952 - 3015)
Des Moines, Iowa....... James "Jim" Penland, 62, passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center.   Jim was born April 17, 1952 in Des Moines to Robert and Thelma (Horton) Penland.   He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Iowa State University.   He worked as a computer programmer throughout his life.   Jim had been part owner of Micro Age in Des Moines and retired from ADP where he was a Senior Programmer.   He was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.   Jim was also a member of Grace Baptist Church where he had served as Treasurer for 20 years, computerizing all their records in 1992.   Jim enjoyed listening to Gospel music, collecting comic books, watching movies and spending time with his nieces and nephews.   He is survived by his mother, Thelma Penland, siblings, Stephen Penland, Larry (Diane) Penland, and Joni (Leroy) Penland;   nieces and nephews, Angie (Bill) Eggers, Tim (Liz) Penland, Justin Atha, Jessica (Scott) Henry, Jarron Atha, Olivia Penland and Garrett Penland;  a great-niece, three great-nephews, and a host of extended family and friends.   He was preceded in death by his father Robert Penland.

Georgia Phelps Penland           (1940 - 2015)
Georgia Phelps Penland of Sweetwater passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2015.   She was of the Baptist faith.  Preceded in death by her husbands, Charles Eugene Phelps and J. D. Penland; sisters, Viola, Jean, Eda Mae;  brothers, Charles, Paul and R. C. and stepson, Cotton Penland.   Survivors include her daughter, Katherine Phelps, son and daughter-in-law, Charles "Wayne" and Sandra Phelps;  granddaughter and husband, Bridget and Tyler Blankenship;  great-granddaughter, Hanna Blankenship;  brother and sister-in-law, G.W. and Dorothy Brown, all of Sweetwater;  stepsons and daughters-in-law, Wylene Penland, Dale and Merle Penland, David and Tob Penland, Gene and Joyce Penland, Dwight Penland, all of Hiawassee, Georgia.   Twelve step-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Jack Penland                     (1942 - 2015)
Jack Penland, age 73, passed away Friday, July 31, 2015, at his home.   He was born in Laurens, South Carolina and was a son of the late George M. Penland and his wife, Elizabeth Anderson.   Everyone knew his love was his cattle and farming, and he enjoyed his time with his friends at Wilson's almost as much.  He was a member of Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church.   Jack will be forever known as a giving and gentle man.   He is survived by his wife Carolyn B. Penland;   his brother, Stanley Penland and his wife Debra Parsons, and his sister, Reba Vincent and her husband Tony, all of Laurens.   In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Wayne Penland.  Burial was in the Rocky  Springs Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Billy Gerald Penland             (1960 - 2015)
Billy Gerald Penland, age 55, of Black Mountain, passed away April 23, 2015 at Mission Hospital in Asheville.   Billy was born in Buncombe County on April 5, 1960 to the late Bill and Virginia Smathers Penland.   Billy was a member of the McCune Lions Club and enjoyed wrestling, NASCAR, dancing, country music and spending time with his family.   He had a positive outlook on life, was always ready for a new experience and always had a good time wherever he went.   He was a strong Christian and loved the Lord.  His witness was his smile and he was always ready for a hug.   He is survived by his siblings, Dianne Smith (Dave), Sheryl Hare (Evan), Danny Frye (Debbie) and Joseph Penland (Christie) and several loving aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

John "Jack" Redmond Penland     (1927 - 2015)
John "Jack" Redmond Penland passed away Monday, May 18, 2015 in Gulfport, Mississippi.   He retired from Johnson Outboard Marine Corporation, as an area service manager covering the panhandle of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisana.   He traveled and healed sick outboard motors in the BASS tournament circuit.   The only outboard motor Mr. Penland was unable to quickly repair during a tournament, unfortunately, was Tom Mann's in the 1974 Classic.   "Somebody forgot to mix the oil with the gas, and after Tom got a little ways out on the lake, the motor completely froze up", Penland related.   Although Jack repaired most outboard motors dockside, he and his Johnson Courtesy boat, an 18-foot Terry bass rig, ocassionally made 'house calls' to fishermen stalled on the lake.   He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lucille Penland;  brothers, Robert and Paul Penland;  sister, Audrey Wood;  daughter, Judith Penland Webber;  granddaughter Jaclyn Webber.   Jack is survived by his wife of 61 years,        Rosalie Penland;  daughters, Mary Penland Speyrer, Kathleen Penland Keel and Patricia Penland Madigan;  sister, Pat Deutch (Martin);  grandchildren, Alan Speyrer, Leah Speyrer Spilling, David Webber, Dr. Murray E. Keel, III, Abigail Keel, Isaac Keel, Rebecca Keel and Thomas Madigan, Allie Speyrer and Gwen Spilling.


Rosalie Algiers Penland             (1932 - 2015)
Rosalie Algiers Penland, 83, passed awayTuesday, July 14, 2015 in Gulfport, Mississippi.   She was born and raised in Hartford, Wisconcin.   She graduated from the St. Therese Hospital School of Nursing in Waukegan, IL, as a registered nurse in 1954.   She practiced nursing until her retirement in 2000.   Rosalie was always fun loving, enjoyed a good story and laugh.   She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.   She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lucy Algiers;  her husband, John "Jack" Redmond Penland (just two months ago);  daughter, Judith Penland Webber;  granddaughter, Jaclyn Webber;  brothers, Drs. Norbert and Lawrence Algiers;  sister, Mary Algiers Ohrmund.   She is survived by daughters, Mary Penland Speyrer, Kathleen Penland Keel &  Patrice Penland Madigan;  brothers, Dr. James Algiers and Charles Algiers;  grandchildren, Alan Speyrer, Leah Speyrer Spilling, David Webber, Dr. Murray E. Keel  III, Abigail Keel, Isaac Keel, Rebecca Keel and Thomas Madigan;  great-granddaughters, Allie Speyrer and Gwen Spilling.

Hickory, N. C. ......  Charles Russell Penland,89, of Hickory, passed away Friday, September 4, 1925 at Catawba Regional Hospice.   Born November 8, 1925 in Catawba County to the late Russell and Mary Kerr Penland.   Mr Penland was a decorated World War II veteran, having served in the U.S, Navy from 1942 to 1946, stationed on the USS Gilbert Islands of the Pacific.   He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 25 years of service.   He was a member of Highland Baptist Church and Sandy Ridge American Legion Post 544 of Hickory.   In additiom to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Harris Penland; and sister Margie P. Pope.   Those left to cherish Charles' memory are his son, C. Norman Penland and his wife, Beverly of Conover;  daughters, Sharon P. Reece and husband, Tom of Hickory and Mary P. Wise of Vale;  grandchildren, Kevin Reece, Kelly Wise, Chris Wise, Chad Penland and Emily Boyd;  and five great-grandchildren.

James "Red" Oliver Penland     (1939 - 2015)
LaFayette, Georgia......... James "Red" Oliver Penland, 76, passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2015.  Red was born on September 2, 1939 to the late Clyde and Euna Penland.   He was a 1957 graduate of LaFayette High School, where he was a trumpet player and football player.   After graduating, he served in the U.S. Navy, and was a retired boilermaker.   During Red's career as a boilermaker, he became a mentor to countless young men.   After retirement he took up construction and became owner of Penland Construction.   In his spare time Red enjoyed golfing, drag racing, motorcycle racing, sky diving, scuba diving, horseback riding, horse racing, horse showing, sailing, hunting, fishing, taveling, and #1 fan cheering on all his grandchildren.   James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.   He was preceded in death by his parents; sister JoAnn Penland Hill;  and brother, DeForest Penland and son Mike Penland.   Survived by loving wife of 57 years, Jean Smith Penland;  sons Rick and Ken Penland;  grandchildren, Rick, Randi, Cody, Whitney, Jake, Kori, and Cole Penland;  great-grandchildren, Laci,
Anabelle, Owen and Olivia Penland;  sister, Tona Penland;  several nieces and nephews also survive.
