Oakville, California........ PHILIP  DOW  PENLAND, 91  PASSES  AWAY
Philip Dow Penland was born near Yountsville, California on March 16, 1920 to Lorenzo & Emvah Penland.   When he was seven years old, he and his family moved to the property in Oakville where he lived until his death.   His wife of 66 years, Shirley (Hurd) Penland  and his two daughters, Phyllis Penland Anderson and Susan Penland Shorey were with him.
Philip is also survived by six grandchildren, Tia, Erin, Jessica, Andrew, Matthew and Adam, as well as five great-grandchildren, Aila, Blake, Mason, Christian and Sarah.
As a youngster, Phil walked through the vineyards to the Oakville School, and later graduated from Napa Highschool.   He served honorably during World War ii in both the European and Pacific Theaters.   He participated in the Invasion of Sicily and Salerno, Italy on LST 378.   Prior to his retirement, Phil worked for 33 years in Rutherford as Foreman at the Lincoln Ford Implement Company, and then at the Wilcox Tractor Company.   Burial was on December 12,  2011 at St.Helena Public Cemetery.
NOTE:  Philip was the great-great-grandson of George Washington Penland, the eldest son of William Penland and Mary Casey of Roane County, Tennessee.   George migrated to Missouri  around 1830.

Weaverville, N.C. .......  MILDRED PENLAND NEWSOME, 95  PASSES AWAY
Mildred Penland Newsome, age 95, of Weaverville, died Sunday, February 5, 2012.   Mildred was born October 4, 1916, in Yancey County and was a resident of Buncombe County for most of her life.   She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.   She was preceded in death by her parents,
John and Ola McGuire Penland; and husband, Harold E. Newsome, who died in 1999.  Surviving is her son, Steve Newsome of Weaverville.   A graveside service was held on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at West Memorial Park.

Asheville Citizen-Times, 1 Feb, 2012 ....... FRANK LAYTON PENLAND, Sr.  79, DIES
Frank Layton Penland, Sr., age 79, of Woodfin died on Tuesday, January 31, 2012.   Mr. Penland was born August 18, 1932, in Buncombe County where he lived all of his life.   He retired from the National Climatic Data Center, and had served on the Woodfin Planning and Zoning Board.   Frank served in the Korean War, as a member of the U.S. Navy.   He was a member and Deacon of the Newbridge Baptist Church and a member of the Rice and Sprinkle Sunday School Class.   He was preceded in death by his parents, William Robert and Inez Sheppard Penland;  brother, Thomas Penland;  and infant brother, Julian Penland.   Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Janet Pounders Penland;  sons, Frank Layton Penland, Jr., and wife Holly of Leicester, and Michael Kevin Penland of Woodfin;  brothers, Donald W. Penland of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Hugh E. Penland and wife  Margaret of Kingsport, Tennessee;  granddaughter, Heather Ann Penland;  grandsons, Hunter Layton Penland, Jonathan David Penland, and Jared Michael Penland.    The funeral service was held on February 3, 2012 at Newbridge Baptist Church.   Burial was in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.

Ashley Pearl Penland  marries  Ryan Shinkle
On the 3rd day of March 2012,  Ashley Pearl Penland &  Ryan Shinkle were married at "The Gallery" in Houston, Texas.  Approximately 100 happy friends and family members of the Bride and Groom attended the ceremony and the reception that followed.   Rachel Penland,  younger sister of the bride and Luke Shinkle,  younger brother of the groom were among those serving as members of the wedding party.   Both Ashley & Ryan attended Cooper High School in Abilene, Texas when both their fathers' were in the USAF.    Since graduating from college both have been working in Houston.   Ashley is the daughter of Michael & Kimberly Penland, of Arlington, Virginia.   Ryan is the son of Steve Shinkle, of Abilene, Texas and Kelly Clement  who lives near Houston.   Ashley is the granddaughter of Charles & Phyllis Penland of Selma, Texas.   After their honeymoon, the newly married couple will continue to make their home in a surburb of Houston.   { Ashley is an eighth

  JOSEPH H. PENLAND OF FRONTIER OKLAHOMA FOUND

Joe H. Penland, 65, farm resident of Commanche County since 1931 died of a heart  ailment at 10:00 p.m. Sunday after one week's illness.   Although he resided six miles west and one mile south of Lawton, Mr Penland was at the home of a relative near Geronimo at the time of his death.    He was married in 1896 to Miss. Maggie McCracken at St. Jo., Texas.   Surviving are five sons, Guy Penland, C. E. Penland, and Joe Penland, all of Lawton;  and J. L. Penland,  & R. E. Penland of Borger, Texas;  five daughters, Mrs. W. T. Penland, Mrs. E.  Penland,  Mrs. Floyd Clifton, and Mrs. H. W. Johnson, all of Lawton, and Mrs. W. L. Tedder of Los Andren (sic).   Funeral services were held  at the Geronimo Baptist Church and burial was in the Allendale Cemetery .

Obituary:  VIVIAN PENLAND WILLIAMS, AGE  89, Bryson City, NC
Vivian P. Williams, 89, passed away on March 13, 2012 surrounded by her family, caregivers and friends.   Vivian was an accomplished  Lady, who was loved and admired by all who knew her.    She had retired as a teacher in the Swain County School System.   Vivian was born on February 16, 1923 to Garfield and Jessie Moody Penland.   She was preceded in death by her parents;  her beloved husband, Paul Manner  Williams;  her sister, Mildred P. Wood; and her "brother" Penland.   She is survived by her nephew, Daniel D. Wood, Jr. and wife Lisa;  her niece, Vivi Ann Wood;  her dog, "Mugs" and great niece, Erin Leigh Wood Peterman;  caregivers and friends.    Graveside services were held at the Bryson City  Cemetery on the following Thursday. Obituary:   ELIZABETH MCGEE  "LIB" PENLAND, AGE  86, Candler, NC
Elizabeth McGee 'Lib" Penland, age 86, died Friday, March 16, 2012, surrounded by 'her girls' at Aston Park Health Care Center.   She was born April 16, 1925, in Anderson County, SC, to the late Robert and Bertha Milford McGee.   She married Joseph R. "Joe" Penland in 1948.  They are survived by three daughters, Joette Penland Anders (Bill) of Greensburg, PA;  Annette Penland Gibbs (Chris) of Richmond, VA and Diane Penland Skelton of Candler;  seven grandchildren, Topher Gibbs, Tabatha Gibbs Baker, Michael and Ashley Anders, Nicole Skelton McConnell,  and Eric and Eron Skelton;  and one Great grandchild, Colbie Baker.  Two Sisters Doris "Dot" Broome (Bill) and Joyce "Joy" Gresham, and a sister-in-law, Beverly McGee, all of Asheville.   Lib was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Penland, two of her siblings, a sister, Margaret McGee Jones, and a brother, Carroll Robert McGee, and son-in-law, Howard Lee Skelton.   Graveside services were held on Tuesday March 20, 2012 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
