Congratulations to Connor K. Penland!
Recently, Connor Penland completed his education to become a Nurse!   He graduated from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio on 15 December 2015 with a  Bachelors Degree in Nursing.   Sixteen days later, on 31 December,  he married his classmate & the love of his life, Tere Soldano!    Tere had also graduated in the same class on 15 December with the same degree.  The wedding ceremony was conducted in the back yard of his parent's home in Schertz, Texas by his father, retired USAF Major, Patrick A. Penland.   Many family members & friends attended.   The newlywed couple celebrated their wedding with a cruise in the Gulf of Mexico.  Connor is employed by the Northeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio as an ICU Nurse.   Tere is working as an NICU Nurse at the Methodist Hospital, also in San Antonio!    Connor is the son of Patrick & Tawnya Penland and Tere is the daughter of Javier Sandoval & the late Teresa Pina Sandoval Gutierrez, of San Antonio.

Barbara  Ann  Cowan  Penland  (1938 - 2016)
Marshall, NC........  Barbara Ann Cowan Penland, 77, of Marshall passed away Friday, January 8, 2016.   Mrs. Penland, a native of Jackson County, was born July 5, 1938 to the late John David and Nora Hoxit Cowan.   Barbara was the owner operator of Balsam Beauty Shop for over 40 years and continued the operation of Penland and Sons Department Store after her husband, Edward Penland, Sr. passed away in 2002.   Mrs. Penland was a member of the Marshall Presbyterian Church.   Surviving are her daughters, Georgette Shelton (Michael) and Susan Rector (Dennis), grandchildren;  Holly Massey (Ronnie), Ryan Rector (Denise), Heather Mitchell (Matt), Hannah Arrowood (Darren);   great grandchildren, Jackson Massey, Gabby Arrowood, Penland Rector, Gracie Arrowood, and Kayson Mitchell;  sister, Bonnie Sutton (Freddie);  special friend and caregiver, Tanya Burnette.

Robert  Lloyd  Penland        (1944 - 2016)
Asheville, NC...........  Robert Lloyd Penland, 72, of Asheville, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 4, 2016.   A memorial service was  held on Monday, January 11, 2016.

Jack B. Penland               (1936 - 2016)
Weaverville, NC............. Penland, age 79 of Weaverville died January 10, 2016 from injuries sustained in a house fire.   Mr. Penland was born December 2, 1936 in Buncombe County where he had lived all his life.   He served in the U.S. Air Force and was Past Master of the Vance Masonic Lodge #293 A.F. and A.M.    An avid Bluegrass musician, he was an orginal member of the Stoney Creek Boys.   He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Eula Cunningham Penland, and son Randy Penland.   Surviving are his wife, Patsy Thomas Penland;  sons Richard Penland and wife Susan & Ronald Penland and friend Dianne;   daughter, Pauline Bitner and husband Stephen;  sister, Brenda Hardy;  three grandchildren and several great grandchildren.   Jack was buried in the Penland Cemetery in Weaverville.

Carmel Clyde Penland     (1933 - 2016)
Carmel Clyde Penland, 83, of Asheville, NC went to be with the Lord January 2, 2016 at John F. Keever Solace Center.   He was the son of the late Clyde and Derfie Willis Penland.   Mr Penland was retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation and a member of Mount Sheba Baptist Church.   In addition to his parents, Mr. Penland was preceded in death by sisters, Jean Holland, Grace Holcombe and Stella Penland, a great grandson, "A.J." Aaron Jace Cedeno.   He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Louise Gaddy Penland, daughters, Rhonda Estel (Roger), Melissa Sumner (Aaron), son, Steven Penland (Peggy), sister, Gladys Rutledge, 7 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, a special nephew, Buford McGuinn and several other nieces & nephews.

Carroll W. Penland           (1924 - 2016)
Inman, SC.........Carroll W. Penland, age 91, died on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Valley Falls Terrace, a caring and loving facility, in Spartanburg.   He was the son of James L. and Ethel Hames Penland.   He was born on March 27, 1924, in Inman, South Carolina.   He retired as an accomplished auto body mechanic.   He served his country with distinction as a Private in the U. S. Army during World War II.   He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Beulah, daughter, Nancy and son, David.   He remarried in 1993 to Margaret Ponnese McCraw.    He is survived by his grandchildren, Noelle Logan, Nicole Marquis, Corrie Penland, D.J. Penland, Tara Green and great grandchildren Danielle and Thomas Logan, Ashley and Alex Marquis, Brytney Melgar, Dyllin Ava Green, Nicholas and Ruby Penland, and sister in law, Frances C. Huffman.

Lorena Mae Penland    (1932 - 2016)
Lorena Mae Penland passed away peacefully on January 8, 2016 in Silver Spring, Maryland.   Mrs Penland was born October 6, 1932 to Ola Castro and Cora Edna Rhodes-Castro in Statts Mills, West Virginia, where she grew up.   She moved to the Washington D.C. area as a young woman, along with her sister, and began working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a secretary.   She married and left her job to raise her family following the birth of her children.   She was a dedicated and involved mother, active with the Scouts, 4-H, sports and other activities with her children.   Mrs. Penland was an incredible cook and passed on her culinary passion to both of her children.   Beloved wife of Clarence Harrison Penland, Jr.;  loving mother of Miles Anthony Penland (Eileen) and Laura Elizabeth Walsh (Steven Mark) ;  grandmother of Garrett Michael, Connor Harrison, and Devon Elizabeth Walsh, Christina Michelle Penland and the late Kevin James Walsh;  sister of Glenver Cleo and Russell Ray Castro and the late Ervil Hobart, Otmer Ralph, Elva Marie, Okey Lee, Orpha Josephione, Ida Faye and Lydia Gay Castro.

Arma Lee Penland              (1934 - 2015)
Arma Lee Penland, 81, passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2015, in Cincinnati, Ohio.   She was born September 7, 1934, in Monroeville, Alabama.

Margaret Penland Hensley     (1925 - 2015)
Asheville, NC...............Margaret Penland Hensley, 90, died Thursday, December 31, 2015, at Aston Park Health Care Center.   Mrs. Hensley was born in Asheville and was a daughter of the late Ed and Cloye Morgan Penland.   She was married to Hugh W. Hensley, who died in 2000, and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Winstead.   She was a member of the Pole Creek Baptist Church.   Surviving are a daughter, Brenda Taylor (David Redmond); three sons, Steve Hensley (Nikki), Ronnie Hensley (Debbie) and Terry Hensley;  seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Martha Penland Justice          (1930 - 2016)
Arden, NC......... Martha Penland Justice, 86, of Arden died Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at her residence.   A native of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Edna Brank Penland.   Martha is survived by her husband of 67 years, Joe Justice, one daughter, Linda Jo Justice  of the home, one son, Robert Justice of Fletcher, one brother, Tom Penland of Candler, one grandson, Gregory Justice, as well as two great grandchildren, Delilah and Adriana Justice.

Carolyn Sue Penland Rainwater    (1937  -  2016)
Woodfin, NC ............Carolyn Sue Penland Rainwater, age 78, died Wednesday, March 2, 2016.   Carolyn was born March 24, 1937 in Buncombe County where she had lived all her life.   She was retired from Kmart on Patton Avenue and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.   Carolyn was the daughter of the late Aubrey William and Grace Laster Penland, and wife of the late Garlen Rainwater who died in 1993.   Surviving are her sons, George Robert Rainwater and wife Jennifer;  Rodney William Rainwater and wife Marlene;  five grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.   She was buried in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

Betty Penland              (1930 - 2016)
Betty Penland, 86, of Hayesville, died Sunday, February 14, 2016 in Hope Memory Care Center in Dacula, Georgia.   She was a native of Canada, but lived many places during her late husband's military career before moving to Hayesville in 1990.   She was a homemaker and a member of the Mount
Pleasant Baptist Church.   She was the daughter of the late Cecil and Helen Morse Guptill and the wife of the late William Donald Penland, who died May 9, 2009.   She was also preceded in death by a son. Bryan Donald Penland.   Surviving are two daughters, Bethany Edkin and husband, Eric of Monroe, Georgia, and Sherry Pittman and husband, Bill of Blairsville, Georgia;  a son, Rodney J. Penland and wife, Tonya of Hayesville;  and 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Johnny Penland Plott        (1943 - 2016)
Waynesville, NC.....Johnny Penland Plott, 72, died on January 18, 2016 at the VA Medical Center Hospice.   Johnny was born in Haywood County on March 30, 1943, to the late Fred and Sammie Penland Plott.   Johnny was an avid sportsman and loved spending time with his family.   He retired from Dayco after more than 30 plus years of service and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by a brother, Mont Plott and a sister, Marietta Plott.   Johnny is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda Sutton Plott;  a son, Monte Plott, two daughters, Renee Liner and Julia Plott and her husband, Edmund New;  his daughter-in-law, Christy Plott;  his grandchildren, Levi Birchall, Taylor Plott, Caleb Plott, Trent New, and Amos Rich;  asn d his special dog, Pixie,

Madge Penland Sewell Martindale   (1921 - 2016)
Lakeland, Florida............Madge Penland Sewell Martindale, 94, 2016 at the Highlands Lake Center.   Born in Arnoldsville, GA she was a lifelong resident of Lakeland.   She retired with 31 years of service as a Corseteer from Maas Brothers Clothing Store in Lakeland, and she attended the Lake Gibson Church of the Nazarene.  Madge was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and will be dearly missed.   Madge was preceded in death by her first husband Earl Sewell, second husband Harold Martindale and a son, Ron Sewell.   She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Raulerson and husband Ryan of Winter Haven; sister, Jacqueline H. Carter of Chatanooga, TN and a grandson Michael Huffman of Houston, TX.

Robert Lloyd Penland           (1944 - 2016)
Asheville, NC.............Robert Lloyd Penland, 72, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 4, 2016.  A memorial service was held on January 11 at the Trinity Baptist Church, where he was a member.

Lena Penland Metcalf          (1928 - 2016)
Horton Creek, NC.......Lena Penland Metcalf, 88, of the Horton Creek Community, went to be with The Lord on February 24, 2016.   She was a daughter of the late Fred and Estie Robinson Penland, and the wife of Coy Metcalf who passed away in 2007. She was also preceded in death by her brothers:  Arnold, Arvil, and Carol;  sisters, Ethel and Frances;  sons, Paul, J. R., and Clinton;  grandsons, Chris and J. R. Junior Metcalf.   Lena enjoyed the Grand Ole Opry music, gardening and being with her family and friends.  She never met a stranger.  Everyone was always welcomed in her home with open arms and a smile.  She was a true friend to all who knew her.   Lena was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.   Surviving are her son, Clifford Metcalf and his wife, Deborah;  daughters-in-law ;  Gail Davis Metcalf of Spruce Pine, Iva Glenn Gentry Metcalf of Shelton Laurel;  sisters, Camalee Robinson of Burnsville, Evelyn Hensley of Mars Hill;  9 grandchildren;  Jeremy, Jason, Darlene, Tim, Terry, Candy, Sandra, Alisha and Niki;  and 22 great grandchildren also survive.   Burial was in the Metcalf Cemetery on Horton Creek Road.
