    Theodore Augustus Penland      ((23 Jan 1849 -  13 Sep 1950)
September marked the 68th anniversary of the death of Theodore Augustus Penland, a remarkable member of the Penland family! He lived to be 101 years of age and was probably best known as the last Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic.
When Theodore died there were only eight other surviving Union veterans.  His father John Penland, a Union soldier, died as a result of wounds receiverd in the Battle of Stone's River.   Theodore, at age 16 lied about his age and enlisted in the Union Army.  He enlisted in Company A, 152nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry at Goshen, Indiana and mustered out of service August 2, 1865 at Charlestown, West Virginia.  He farmed and worked on the railroad for a time, but three years later he walked from Indiana to California and was working on the railroad there when the golden spike was driven completing the transcontinental line at Promontory Point.  Ultimately, Theodore spent the last 70 years of his life in Portland, Oregon.  Later in life he became known as a world traveler visiting such places as Australia and New Zealand.  He was deeply involved in veterans affairs and attended battlefield reunions at Gettysburg and National and Department Encampments of the GAR.  He held the top office of Commander in the Department of Oregon from 1935 until his death.  In 1948 he was elected Commander-in-Chief of the GAR and presided at the final Encampment in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1949.   He enjoyed giving talks about his Civil War experiences, of the time he saw President Abraham Lincoln and on the virtues of "living carefully".   Theodore was married twice (both wives were named Elizabeth) and he was the father of  ten children.
[Theodore Penland was a man of the past all Penland's can be proud of!]
