You may re-call that one of the stories about how the Penland family name came to be, involved a descendant of the ancient King of the "Picts," Galam Cennalath, in Northern Scotland.
Galam died in 840 A.D.   Over the next 400 years his descendants inter-married with the Jarls of Norway who had militarily invaded Northern Scotland.  One of them later became known as "Jarl David of Orkney" and in 1205 received the additional title of "Earl of Caithness".  In 1210, David asked his brother-in-law, Thorkel Petlandi to take his son William to southern Scotland out of harm's way. {Remember, in Pictland the children took the name of their mother - hence, William Petlandi}.   Jarl David died in 1214.   The son, William grew up and married Margeret Murry and they had three sons.   It is very possible that William's family was the first Petlandi, Pentland, Penland family!

In 2012, Patrick Alan Penland had his DNA analyzed through, the world’s largest online resource for family history documents and family trees. DNA lab analysts used advanced equipment and techniques to measure approximately 700,000 points in his genome, {the identified thousands of genes that make up human DNA},  with at least a 98% rate of accuracy. Results were then compared to a comprehensive and unique collection of genetic signatures from around the world.

Genetic ethnicity comparisons from that analysis revealed where Patrick's Pentland ancestors lived hundreds, perhaps even thousands of years ago.   The results:

53% British Isles: modern day England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales.

38% Scandinavian: modern day Norway, Sweden, Denmark.

9% Persian/Turkish/Caucasus: modern day Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan.

The above DNA analysis appears to support the assertion that the first Pentlands in ancient Scotland likely descended from the race of people known as the Picts. It is generally accepted the Picts were the indigenous Iron Age people of the northern highlands, perhaps originating from Scandinavia, or at least mixing bloodlines with the Viking Norsemen who subjected them to frequent raids and eventual occupation.

Does all that absolutely prove where the Pentlands came from?  Probably not yet, but it certainly seems to lend some credibility to the Jarl David story.   We will continue searching for Penland family roots and reporting on our efforts!
