                            Note of Thanks!

Just received the following note thanking all of you for responding to the call for assistance in restoring the Historic
                                                                     Penland, North Carolina Post Office:
Thanks to everyone who has donated via our online fundraising campaign, and/or who have sent money
to our mailbox, we have raised almost 14% of our goal!   Every day we are getting closer to success.   With
your support and those like you, we can achieve the dream of restoring the Penland Post Office and general store.

This essential community hub is the heart of Penland, where neighbors, students, and visiting tourists bump into each
other on a daily basis.   Connecting in a rural area is difficult these days, but essential to the fabric of our society.
Knowing one another and keeping up with important events of each other's lives is crucial to the well being of any

And for those family and friends who live afar, it is an important piece of our heritage, for which we would be much less
rich without.   The history of our family,  the history of Penland, the founding of Mitchell County, of Western North Carolina
is housed in the very fiber of this building.

Please donate what you can, whether $25, $50, or $25,000!    Your dollars today will ensure this community treasure
survives into the future!   Thank you again!  ..................... Alicia Swaringen, Chairperson Penland Post Office Project

Murphy, Texas & the grandson of Vernon  and Connie Penland of Wonder Lake, Illinois {Vernon is a GGGgrandson of George
William Penland, Sr. 1753 - 1812}.   Sean will be graduating from A&M in the spring of 2017 with a Masters Degree in
Engineering and a Bachelor of Science with Honors degree.   At that time, he will have earned a rated (Pilot) commission as a
Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.   During his final year with the Cadets at A & M Sean served as the Commanding
Officer of Squadron One.   His career goal is to combine his Engineering knowledge & dream of flying to become a Pilot, to
graduate from the Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB, and ultimately to become an Astronaut with NASA.   Because of his
outstanding academic ability and demonstrated leadership qualities, Sean:

         a.  Began his 'research career' with involvement on a NASA - funded compressive sensing and reconstructive
imaging team tailored to the stringent mass, power, volume and financial constraints associated with modern
              CubeSAT systems.

         b.  Studied the inlet unstart phenomena in hypersonic glide vehicles and assisted in efforts to control the often
violent, post-unstart behavior by using modern control theory techniques.

c .  Collaborated on a recently submitted publication to the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics'
Journal of Guidance, Dynamics and Control.

         d.  In June 2015, selected for a U. S. Department of Defense / U. S. Department of Energy Internship with the
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California simulating the deflection and disruption of
planetary bodies using the world-class high-performance computing capabilities available there.

          e.  Been selected recently for a unique, Cadet-only nationwide integrated photonics initiative sponsored by the U. S.
Department of Defense and managed by Clarkson Aerospace Corporation.

          f.  Been employed in the Air Armament Scholars program at the Munitions Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory,
Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, where he is assigned to optimize multidimensional, multifidelity simulation
              models for hypersonic vehicles.

Throughout his experience in the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M, Sean has been recognized for his knowledge and leadership,
as an Undergraduate Research Ambassador and the most senior member of the Engineering Honors Executive Council.   He
is a recipient of the Civil Air Patrol's General Billy Mitchell Award, Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges distinction,
the German Armed Forces Gold Badge for Military Proficiency, as well as multiple Air Force ROTC and Corps of Cadets cadet
awards, including Distinguished Student, Achievment, Warrior Spirit, Physical Fitness, Academic Excellence, and Expert
Marksmanship awards, as well as Arnold Society and O.R. Simpson Corps Honor Society memberships.

In his spare time, Sean enjoys playing tennis with his father, and he enjoys riding motorcycles!

{Sean is a young man getting well prepared for a life of service and leadership -- we
congratulate him, his parents & his grandparents!   AND, we look forward to witnessing
             what life has in store for him!    He's aiming for the stars! }

Glimpse of Past "Penland" News items

22 August 1880 -  The Franklin Press, Franklin, NC...............  Lige Prather and Enoch Penland became involved in a
quarrel one day last week as they left town which culminated in a fight about a mile from town, on the Georgia Road.
According to the information we have Prather knocked Penland down twice with a stick and jumped on him, whereupon
Penland, while down, drew a knife and stabbed Prather in the back of the neck.   Prather rose running towards town crying,
"I'm killed, I'm killed!" while Penland, probably thinking that he had killed the man, struck out in the direction of Georgia.
No arrests have been made or warrants issued, although we are informed that one magistrate was called on for a warrant
for one of the parties, but it was refused.   The above belligerents were colored.

August  1880 - The Franklin Press, Franklin, NC ............. We are very sorry to learn that Mr. Harvey Penland of Clay County
is very dangerously ill.   He is one of Clay';s most substantial citizens.

14 June 1915 -  The Huntsville Daily Times, Huntsville, Alabama.......... Alex Penland, an innocent bystander was shot
and painfully wounded yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock as a result of a shooting affray between Tom Polk and Walter
Draper at Tallucah across the Tennessee River on the Morgan County side.   Draper and Polk had fallen out and were
desperately measuring arms with their weapons when a stray bullet from Polk's pistol lodged in one of Penland's legs just
above the knee.   It is thought the injury is only a flesh wound and that Penland will be well in a few days.   No arrests have
been made at this writing.   All parties in the unfortunate shooting affray are white men.
